Getting New Computer

M

Mary Susan

I have Office XP and have installed it on a notebook and
desktop (two installations). I am now replacing my
notebook, but can't figure out how to do another
installation. Any help appreciated.

Hi, Mary Susan,

If you are installing it on a new notebook, simply install it again. Are
you receiving a message that it has been activated on another machine
already? If so, use the telephone method of activation and explain the
hardware change to the operator.

Thanks. I ran into some kind of snafu once before when I
replaced a computer and my memory was of being told I
would have to pay another licensing fee because it had
been installed on two computers (even though they were all
my computers). But I will give it another try.

You can have it installed on one desktop and one laptop. If you replace the
laptop, then uninstall it from the original one. If you replace the
desktop, then uninstall it from the original one. As long as you are
removing it from the old machine, and it is only installed on one desktop
and one laptop, you are in compliance (as long as that is the agreement you
agreed to in your end user license agreement provided with the software you
are installing).

Microsoft Preferred Customer

In my experience, Microsoft is quite relaxed when it comes to
activation. There is generally no problem to bonafide customers.
Activation has slightly reduced casual copying of the software but It
looks like new OEM products may not require activation; only the retail
versions may require. This is just my gut feeling and not the official
policy of Microsoft.
