Grouping Tasks into Work Scope Divisions and giving a Description

Hi,

I am scheduling construction. In a typical job, you can break down summary
tasks into concrete, steel, carpentry, etc. What happens though is that the
sequence of tasks in a project do not always fall under the same summary task.

In MS Project we have the WBS field which simply numbers each task under
each summary task.

For example

Summary Task A WBS
Task 1A 1.1
Task 2A 1.2
Summary Task B
Task 1B 2.1
Task 2B 2.2

Unfortunately, in construction, Task 1A might be let to the same contractor
as Task 2B. So what I have done is the following ...

Summary Task A Work Scope Division
Task 1A 1
Task 1B 1
Summary Task B
Task 2A 2
Task 2B 1

When I select Project | Group and I group by Work Scope Division, I get the
following...

Description Work Scope Division
BLANK UNEDITABLE SPACE
Task 1A 1
Task 1B 1
Task 2A 1
BLANK UNEDITABLE SPACE
Task 2B 2

I want to be able to put in a description of what the various Work Scope
Divisions are in the BLANK UNEDITABLE SPACE. Any ideas??

Hi Glenn,

Unfortunately I know of no way to edit the group line. But a couple of
suggestions to offer as a work around.

Do your "Work Scope Divisions" represent the concrete, steel etc. components
of the project? If you change the Work Scope Division coding to "1- Steel",
and "2-Carpentry" will that give the description you wish to show in the
grouping?

The other option I can think of is to use the Resource Group field on the
Resource sheet. When you assign the resources to the tasks, you may group
their tasks by creating a custom group using the "Resource Group" field.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
