Header Number carrying into Outline List in body

I would like to include the Appendix designation (i.e., B) in an outline like
list such that all of the items in the list begin with the Appendix
Designation. (i.e., B.1, C.1, D.1 for each of the three Appendices.)

I would like to be able to just have one outline list type so that I can
reproduce the above options and have changes carry through as they are made.

I have been able to apply an outline format to the first applicable section,
insert a section break and get my next designation; however, when I insert
the outline list and say to continue from previous, it continues numbering
from the previous section, i.e. becomes B.11 instead of C.1. If I say to
restart numbering then it gives B.1 instead of C.1.

Any ideas?

Although there is a lot of useful and helpful information there, I didn't see
how I could piece together the information I am looking for. Maybe I didn't
read "deep" enough to understand it. What I have seen is that if I use one
of the 7 outline number lists available, there is no way to preface the
numbering with additional information other than to put some sort of floating
text box or type in a character in the list that will be repeated throughout
the entire list.

What I have done in the interim is to create an outline list where the first
level of the list has just the single letter for the Appendix designation,
with a font color of white and a super small font. With this the text is
hidden on printing, and when I use the list in the next appendix I get the
incrementation for which I am looking. Not clean and pretty, but functional.

My end product is:
B. (nothing following with letter in white)
B.1 First item in list (Level 2)
B.1.1 First item in Level 3
B.2 Second item in list (Level 2), etc.
then
New Appendix (Section Break Next Page)
C. (nothing following with letter in white)
C.1 First item in list (Level 2)
C.1.1 First item in Level 3
C.2 Second item in list (Level 2), etc.

Unfortunately this is one aspect (Lists in general) for which Microsoft
hasn't made significantly user friendly to customize and adapt to the breadth
of the applications abilities.

Thank you for your assistance.

You add the designation by numbering the appendixes themselves, using one of
the heading styles linked to your outline list. IOW, if you have a heading
"Appendix B: Title of Appendix," then the next level of numbering will pick
up the B used as the appendix number, which is what you have evidently done,
in effect, though I'm not sure why you're coloring it white (you can equally
well make it Hidden) instead of just using it for your appendix numbering or
title.

Put the cursor in at the very beginning of the "Enter formatting for number"
box and type the what you want to appear before every number in that level.
You can also type word, etc., after or even between the numbers. The built-
