HELP! CANNOT OPEN DATABASE!!

K

Kaylen

I'm having a major problem! I cannot open my database and I have a ton of
data in it. When I open the database I got the error message:

"The Microsoft Jet database engine has stopped the process becuase you and
another is attempting to change the same data at the same time!"

I clicked OK and the database just close.
The database is a used by two users but neither of us was in there. I tried
again this morning and I still get the error message. I cannot get into the
tables even when I tried to import the tables into a new database! I really
need help opening the databse becuase I have so much data in it. PLEASE
HELP!! Thank you!

Is the database on your own PC, or is it on a network server? Are you and
the other user both opening the same database file, or is it split into
front-end and back-end, and you each have your own front-end?

Try this:

First make sure that no one currently has the database open. Reboot your
computer to make absolutely sure it isn't still opened by a hidden instance
of Access, and ask the other user to reboot as well.

Then go to the folder containing the database, and look for the database's
lock file. That will be a file with the same name as the database, but the
extension ".ldb". If you find such a file, delete it. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T
ACCIDENTALLY DELETE THE DATABASE ITSELF! If Windows won't let you delete
the lock file, then get someone from your IT department to "force delete" it
or reboot the server. (If it's on your own computer, not a server, you
should be able to delete it.

Now make a copy of the database file, just in case.

Now see if you can open the original database.

I've looked in the folder but didn't see any file with the same name or lock
or ldb extension. You think it is maybe because I duplicated (Save as) the
database and rename it different? I don't know but I can't open this database
still! The databse is on a shared drive and I didnt split it to two ends. Can
you think of any other way I can do to open this database?

My next suggestion would normally be to create a new database and then use
File->Get External Data -> Import to import all the objects from the
original database to the new one. But I think you said you tried that and
it didn't work -- would you confirm that, please?

If you make a copy of the database and try to open that, does that fail,
too?

If worse comes to worst, there are database recovery services that can
probably recover all your data, but I always look at them as a last resort.
How big is your database, if you zip it? If it's small, and doesn't contain
sensitive material, I might be willing to have a look at it myself and see
if I can fix it, or at least get the data out.

Thank You Dirk for trying to help. I tried transferin extrernal data into a
new dtabase but it doesn't work. I still get the same error message. The
databse is not that big, I can zip and email it to you if you wouldn't mind
giving it a try.

Sure, if it it zips down to about 5MB or less, go ahead and send it to me
and I'll see what I can do with it. You can get my e-mail address by
removing "NO SPAM" and ".invalid" from the reply-address of this message, or
you can get it from my website, as listed in my signature.

I just sent the zip database to your email '(e-mail address removed)'. Hope to
hear from your soon. I appreciate your help on this.

I am so sorry, I never knew that.

Thanks for jumping in there, Chris. It was probably already too late, alas.

For anyone following this thread:

I did receive Kaylen's database, but was unable to recover anything from it.
It's so corrupted that it can't be opened by Access or Jet. JetComp can't
open it, and attempting to open a DAO Database object on it fails with the
same error.

I suggested to Kaylen that she contact a database recovery service, and
recommended PK Solutions, as they have a very good reputation and usually
won't even charge if they can't recover anything. There are other services
out there, but I don't know much about them.
