Help : Deleted Items Retension

J

John

Someone deleted something out of their deleted items late yesterday and
wants it back badly.

Where can we check the deleted items retension settings, if any ?

What's the procedure for making these deleted items visible so they can be
retrieved ?

(Exch 2k/outlook 2k environment)

Thanks a lot.

The Deleted Item Retention setting is in the user Properties in Active
Directory Users and Computers, on the Exchange General Tab under Storage
Limits. You would need to deselect the default and put a figure in the "keep
deleted items for (days" field.
Once you have enabled it; then in the client you highlight the Deleted Item
folder and from the Tools menu select Deleted Item Retention obviously it
will be too late fir your user.

Thanks, we're using the mailbox store default, not individual settings.

Apparently it's not too late, since I checked my own mailbox and was able to
retrieve deleted items that were less than 3 months old.

I suspect this is the default setting (90 days) -- does anyone know where it
can be changed in AD or Exchange itself ?

Right that's good to know. Just done some checking and if you go into the
Properties of the mailbox store in ESM then on the Limits Tab deleted items
are default for 30 days on my Exchange 2003, on my Exchange 2000 though it
was set for 7 days which I think I set up a few years ago.

You set the default on the properties of each mailbox store, on the limits
tab. 90 is not the default if I remember correctly, I think it is 7 at most
by default, so someone may have set yours to 90 specifically. The higher the
number of days you set it to, the larger your database will get. As was
mentioned, you can recover items from the deleted items folder by
highlighting the folder in Outlook, and going to Tools - Recover Deleted
Items. There is another way to get access to items that didn't hit that
folder (e.g. shift-deleted items), the kb is 178630.

A quick way is to use OWA - under the options tab, click "recover deleted
items". However, if he shift-deleted them, they're not going to be there.

Now that is handy. Know any good indexes of all the registry settings that
aren't well-known in outlook or exchange? That'd be extremely helpful.

Thanks for the tip!

No, I'm not aware of any but thanks for the suggestion - I'll work on
compiling one.
