help with table sort when repeating heading on same page

If I want to have something like the following sorted by last name , how do I
make it sort all 3 columns of last name ? I tried using a table and sorting
by last name but that sorts each last name column separately:

last name first name last name first name last name
first name



Thanks for any help-this is making me nuts.

The only way this will work is if your table is actually a two-column table
in three newspaper-style columns.
