How can I create script type columns in a Word document?

I want to have a document that has text in one wider column, and prompts (for
use in a PP presentation) in a narrower column.

Using the columns option in Word, if I edit either of these columns I get
text flying from to the other.

I want to be able to have text in both columns that can be edited but that
won't affect the text in other column.

You'll have to use a two-column table, rather than newspaper columns.
You can format the table to have no borders: with the cursor in the
table, simply press CTRL+ALT+U.
