How can I get an email to leave the outbox?

I have had an email in the outbox for two days. I press Send and
Send/Receive but nothing will move it. This problem has occurred previously,
disappeared, and now reappeared. I have just updated Norton to 2005, but the
Send/Receive fault report states it is a Microsoft error. Please help

Turn off mail scanning in Norton. Open the message in the Outbox and press
send/receive.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Wouldbwriter asked:
