how can I get Illustrator CS EPS to preview in Word 2003?

EPS graphics created in Adobe Illustrator CS preview as blank in Word 2003.
They print and PDF fine. They work fine in other programs such as InDesign
2.0 and CS. We have to export them as "legacy EPS" and save down to
Illustrator v.8.0 to get them to preview in Word. This is not acceptable. Is
this a known issue and is there a new EPS import filter or other fix. Please
