How can I get rid of Merlin?

I know that I can hide him, but is there a way to take him off from the
toolbar? Any suggestion/advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you hide him several times he will ask if you want him to go away
permanently. Also, there is a setting to lose the Office Assistant but you
didn't tell us which version of Office you are using.
