How can I reduce glare on photos of shiny metal objects?

I have archived jpg files taken of bright, shiny metal objects that have
glare from the light source. Is there a simple way (a filter application of
some sort ) to remove them?

Dan,
Glare on digital photos is caused by a complete loss of recordable detail,
akin to massive over exposure (burnt out) in a film camera.
Solutions to problems such as this is usually corrected by copying "good"
detail over the the burnt out areas in some sort of cloning operation.
Colour correction filters usually need a difference between the RGB channels
to have an effect, the burnt out areas have no such difference having a
value of 255 in all three channels.
You will need some sort of bitmap correction software for this sort of
correction (and a little skill to make it look realistic) these range from
progs the free Gimp and Picassa 2 all the way up to Photoshop.
