how can i show lag time on summary bar

I have a project that is running in two phases, with one phase ending before
the next begins. My summary bar depicts a project that is "ongoing" even
though a significant amount of time is lag. I want the summary bar to
reflect this by appearing thinner or some other means to show that there is
no work going on during that period. Please help.

Project does not support that. What you can do is split the main summary
task down so that lag time is not represented in the Summary bars, that way
you see a gap when there is no work.
