That is going to be mighty difficult. DPI is "Dots Per Inch" It is not
a file description but a printed photo description and is determined by the
printer.

There is also a pixel measurement but that is the total number of image
elements in the file. It does tend to put a practical limit to the maximum
DPI any printer can produce from a given file, but you would need to know
the size of the print before being able to do any of the math.

Some image processing software will do the math for you, but you will
need to know the size of the intended print.

Hi Mary Etta,

The information Joseph provided is technically correct (i.e. there is a different between pixels per inch and dots per inch), but in
common usage folks use them somewhat interchangeably, and also it is commonly specified as a requirement to achieve a specific
result, that it may not apply to :)

If you open the graphic in an application such as http://www.irfanview.com and click on the information icon it will list a
'resolution' that gives the value of a current graphic. JPEGs are one of the formats that can store that value in the graphic
itself, but aren't required to.
