how can you display initials allocated to a resource

I have a query directed at me from a user, which I'm struggling with.
Basically she has added in all her resources into the resource sheet as
normal, but then added a column for the initials of the resources. Moving
back to the Gannt chart, on the task information lines, she then wishes to
display the allocated resource by initial rather than full name. Ie, if
there was a resource called 'Joe Soap' she wishes the resource to be shown on
the Gannt chart as 'JS', rather than 'Joe Soap'. Is this is possible, and if
so, how?

Thanks

Hi Clanger32,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Format/Bar Styles.../Text tab - click in the Right box where it says
Resource Names, click the drop-down arrow at the right and from the pick
list select Resource Initials.

However, I'm puzzled by adding an initials column, as the Resource sheet
already has a built in Initials column which is what will show by the above
process!

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

In the Gantt Chart View, right click on the column header and select
Insert Column. On the Gantt Chart side, by default it will show Initial

Hi Jonathan,

I think you then have to select which column to insert - in this case it
wouild be the Resource Initials field. But that won't show up in the
Ganttbar without doing as I suggested.

Hi Jonathon,
I don't believe MS Project allows this in its Gantt. But
you can trick it by using Resource Names as the initials,
and Resource Initials as the Name. This approach works
fine and saves space on the gantt.
