How could I create my own default Standard (Project Calendar) ?

O

Omar

I have this default Standard Calendar:
FROM: 9 am to 1 pm AND FROM: 3 pm to 7 pm
I totally changed it to:
FROM: 8 am to 12 pm AND FROM: 1 pm to 5 pm

Now ALL the days are "nondefault working time". I NEED it to turn to the
"default working time", so I can assign it selecting the "Use default" radio
button. How should I proceed ? Where can I totally redefine the Default
Calendar?

Thank you very much for your kind help.

Omar,
I must be missing something. Project's default working times are:
8:00 am to 12:00 pm
1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

and as far as I know, those default values cannot be changed, so I don't
understand how you can have different working times as the default. Are
you sure you don't mean that the default is as stated above and that you
want to change that default to be:
9:00 am to 1:00 pm
3:00 pm to 7:00 pm

You CAN totally redefine the default calendar (i.e. Standard Project
Calendar) but, if you do so by setting different shift times (i.e. From
and To), those new shift times will show as non-default. And so what if
they are, it makes no difference on how Project does it scheduling but
you need to also make sure to re-set the default start and stop times
under Tools/Options/Calendar tab so durations are calculated correctly
per the new calendar.

There is no mistake. There is just one more detail: I'm working with a
template where the default is 9 to 1 - 3 to 7. I want to change that
template so the default becomes 8 to 12 - 1 to 5:30 (my company's actual
shift). My concern is just that: can I change the default to make my own
default in a template so the people using that template will see it as
'default' instead of 'non-default'? Trully I'm getting the right result with
"non-default" shift, but my workmates need that to be the "default" shift, so
it looks natural. 'It is a matter of shape' (I don't know if it is the
correct way to translate "es un asunto de forma" from Spanish). I could
re-create the template, but Project's default calendar is 8 to 12 - 1 to 5
and I need 8 to 12 - 1 to 5:30. I assume your response "as far as I know,
those default values cannot be changed" answers my question: I can't
personalize them without going to 'non-default!

Thank you very much for your concern John.

Omar,

Try Tools-> Options -> Calendar. Change the Default Start to 8 AM and
Default end to 5 PM. Then go back to Tools -> Change Working Time and set
yopur calendar to the Use Default radio button.

Hope this helps.

Omar,
Unless you know a trick that I don't this will NOT change the default
working time. The default working time will still be:
8:00 am 12:00 pm
1:00 pm 5:00 pm

The shift work hours have to be changed manually and then they become
non-default.

Omar,
No matter what I try I cannot get the default start and finish times
that you claim to have. I wonder if the default is different in the
Spanish version. But just for my reference, I'm going to check with my
fellow MVPs. Who know, maybe I'll learn something.

At least for now my bottom line still stands. Change the working
calendar to the times you want and if that results in non-default, then
live with it.

Hi Wiley,

The two settings you mention are not connected in the way you think. You
might like to see FAQ Item: 5. Default Working Hours. FAQs, companion
products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web
address: http://www.mvps.org/project/

Omar - the Default calendar is hard coded and whilst you can change the
calendar you cannot change the Default. The changes you make should be made
the project calendar via Project/Calendar.

Mike and John,

I did make an error in my original answer. The two are not connected.
However, my Standard calendar has non-changeable hours of 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM
so they would appea to be changeable. We are using Project Server 2003. I
wish I knew how it was changed, but it had happened before I arrived here.

BTW, I get the same default calendar when I "Work Offline", when the
Enterprise portion of the MPT is not loaded. So I am puzzled. Any ideas?
Because I am pushing for them to go back to a standard 40 hour calendar here,
and now have no idea how to reset it.

That does NOT do what you think it does. Changing the Tools Options
Calendar Default start and end DOES NOT redefine the default times used by
the radio button Use Default in the change working time pages. What that
field does is tell Project what times to supply in a field such as when
setting a constraint or a deadline when you manually type a date but do not
type a time.
