How do I allow users to edit ranges in Microsoft Project?

I can allow users to edit specific ranges in Microsoft Excel from the "Tools"
menu.
Can I do this with or something similar to this in Microsoft Project?

Hi Dntshootme,

I'm sorry, that is not possible in Project. You can make a project file
read-only but that applies to the entire file. You can export
information out of Project to Excel, save a Project file as HTML, or
print to a PDF program as alternatives.

See FAQ #16 at
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm for additional information.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Well that's a bummer. We'll probably have to keep using excel then. Will
something like this ever be implimented in Project? Here's the situation.
The general manager makes our construction schedule. He saves it on the
server so that everyone can view the schedule. But he want to use the notes
so that our superintendants know how much backfill material and when. He
wants to allow the notes field to be changed and edited by the
superintendants as necessary without the risk of them changing the schedule.

Dntshootme~

I understand your situation and here's a suggestion that may work. It
sounds as though you are looking for a way to have your GM and
superintendents communicate about planning details as well as notes
about how things are going. How about putting a Word document out on
your file server that the GM can hyperlink into the task in Project?
The superintendents can still open the project file (read-only) to see
the schedule. They click on the hyperlink to the word file can add
notes, etc. to the Word file and then save the Word file. No changes
required to the Project file.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

A PERFECT solution. And it works and makes sense to everyone else. However
I am having one small problem. I've gone through and created all the
hyperlinks. But some of the links don't allow my to directly open the
corresponding file. I have created a seperate excel file for each job. This
excel sheet will be where they can make their particular notes. I've named
the excel sheets the same as the tasks in Project. So in Project, task ABC
has a hyperlink to file ABC, and task 123 has a hyperlink to file 123 and so
on down the line. In random cases (at least it seems random), when I go to
task ABC, right click and god to hyperlink, I have to click on hyperlink
(like I did when I was creating the links) and hit ok. The link to the
correct file is there, so all I need to do is hit ok. THEN I can right click
again, go down to hyperlink and over to open. To make this less confusing to
those who are less computer savy than me, I need to be able to just right
click, go to hyperlink, and over to open. But I can't do that in some
situations. Why?

Hi Dntshootme,

I'm glad you found the suggestion to use hyperlinks helpful. I'm a bit
baffled by the problem you report and also unsure of why you are
right-clicking on the hyperlink. Is the hyperlink indicator not
appearing in the indicator column? Just my thought - a regular (left
mouse button click) on the hyperlink indicator seems clearer than a
right click > open.

Any particular reason you are using a right click?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

No reason...I guess I wasn't thinking outside the box. That way seems to
work...every time. Thanks!
