How do I blow away MS Office if I don't have the CDs?

A

Al Dykes

I have a user with an illegal copy of MS Office that has corrupted
itself. I told her to buy a legal copy of O2003 before I'd work on
it.

I can't "uninstall" the old version, What's the offical way to remove
Office manually?

When you install Office 2003, choose the installation option to
automatically remove the previous version. It's very difficult
to manually remove Office.

Tell me about it.

I tried what you said and it asked for the Office CD, which I don't
have.

This is a little more screwed up than I said in my OP. User has a w2k
machine that has some random old version of Office. No CD in
sight. It's stolen software.

A "friend" brings her copy of Office XP over and attempts an upgrade.
She bails out, Either it didn't authenticate or the machine ran out of
disk space. Getting in touch with "friend" is a touchy issue.

I told the user that I would only work on the machine if she bought a
legit copy of Office and gave it to me in the shrink wrap. She got
2003 Teacher ed. (She's a teacher. Can't fault her for that.)

As I said, O2003 wouldn't uninstall OXP, which makes sense but it's a PITA.

O2003 is installed and works but once in a while the XP pop-up that
wants Office XP pops up and I can't kill it.

It's been my experience that the Office 2003 installer will
remove a previous Office edition without the CD, whether you want
it to or not. I'm not sure why you're being prompted for the
previous edition CD.

If you really want to attempt a manual uninstall, I suggest that
you uninstall Office 2003, adapt the following instructions
provided by a Microsoft person some time ago in one of the Office
newsgroups for manually removing Office 2000, and then reinstall
Office 2003.

1. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility
from http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290301

2. Run this utility and check if Office 2000(or other Office
version) is listed.

3. Select Office Products and then click Remove.

4. Click Start, and then click Run.

5. In the "Open" (without the quotation marks) box, type
"regedit" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause
serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating
system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems
that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry
Editor at your own risk.

6. Backup the entire registry and then rename or delete the
following registry keys if present:
