How do I change a bitmap to JPG?

I need to switch from BITMAP to JPG format to be able to post something on a
site online, but for some reason when I click 'save as' the selections are in
grey. Why won't it let me switch file types and how do I tell it to?

Convert with an image editor.
IrFanview is good for this (although its not a true image editor) its a very
handy program to have...and FREE.
