How do I change how my auto shapes move in Word?

I am trying to add to a drawing I made a month or so ago that is a square
grid 8 x8 squares. All match up and touch each other and make a lovely grid.
I now need to add some rectangles to the sides, but when I draw these I
can't get them to line up with the lines on the squares that already exist.
The lines of the rectangles just jump right over the lines of the squares or
don't quite meet them. If this makes any sense and you can help me, I
greatly appreciate it.

Two suggestions. Click on Draw | Grid and check that the settting is snap to
other objects rather than snap to grid. Or hold down the Ctrl key and use the
arrow keys to nudge small increments. Do either of these solve your problem?
