How do I draw a grid with equal sides and be able to vary the size

Learning to Draw

I am trying to learn to draw from photographs by making a graph on paper and
putting a graph overlay (made from clear acetate) on the picture. I need
desperately to practice by making paper graphs. How do I make a template
that I can save and then vary the sizes of the squares in the grid as the
exercises change?

You could use a table, with borders. Change the row height and column width
as required.

Take a look at www.drawingwithword.com and find your way to "Drawing a grid"

When you have your grid and have grouped it all, you can stretch or shrink
it by dragging on the corners. More importantly for your needs, if you hold
the shift key down while you are resizing, it will maintain proportions.

I hope that helps

(and good luck with your drawing)
