How do I copy a Word macro between computers?

I need to copy/transfer a Word macro from my old computer to a new computer
in the Normal.dot template. I don't yet know how to build a macro, and don't
have the time right now.

Copy the template and use the organiser to move data between old and new. Or
simply replace the new normal.dot with a copy of the old.

I copied the file to a jump drive and tried placing it in the same location
on the new computer. I got an error message saying: "Cannot copy Normal: The
requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section
open."

I don't have Word open at all.

If you use Word as your email editor, you have to shut down Outlook as well.

Normal.dot (the file in question) is located in the folder indicated at
tools > options > file locations > user templates. (In Word 2003, the file
is flagged as hidden).
Rename this file, with Word closed (ie there is no lock file present)
Copy the similarly named file to the PC and save it in the same folder.
If it still won't let you do this, see
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm
then reboot the PC and before starting Word try again. This should clear any
locked files.

Thank you all very much for your tips. I've printed the pages you led me to,
but haven't had time today to try any of it. Hopefully on Monday. Have a
great weekend.
