How do I create a notification rule in Outlook 2003?

Having trouble creating a rule to notify my mobile phone when I receive
certain
emails. Rule needs to be server-based, but cannot forward the original
email. I envision a text message like "Check Outlook for important message
from boss" sent to my phone.

It seems like the action "have server reply using a specific message" should
work, but neither my phone nor the sender seems to get a reply.

Outlook Helps states under the heading "About managing messages with rules":

"Notification rules alert you in some way when you receive a particular
message. For example, you can create a rule that automatically sends an
e-mail message to your mobile telephone when you receive a message from a
family member."

Any ideas?? Thanks!

The only server-based rule applicable to your scenario is the one to forward the item. In both cases, they may not be available because of restrictions the Exchange administrator has imposed to block automatic messages to external addresses, a common protection to avoid mail storms. The administrator can set up your mobile number as an alternative recipient for your Exchange mailbox and may be able to tell you whether the company has other server-based options.

Thanks. I assume the example is using a client-based rule using "reply using
a specific template", or just forwarding the emails. Neither will work for
me. I would need it to work when my office laptop is disconnected, and
automatically forwarding would violate company policies.

Maybe you have another idea.... the problem is my company recently replace
my PalmOS Treo 650 with a WM5 Treo 700wx. The Treo650 used Goodlink software
for email, and I could set a silent alert for normal emails, and a loud alert
for "Important" emails. Before that I had a BlackBerry, which would let me
assign a distinctive alert based on sender.

WM5 doesn't allow me to assign a different alert for different emails, but I
can assign a different alert to Text-Messages vs E-mails. That was why I was
trying have the Exchange server send my phone a text message.

I have tried to find a WM5 program that would let me assign a different
alarm for different emails, based on either importance or sender. Haven't
found one. I've found lots of programs that will nag me to read "every"
email. That's the last thing I would want!!! I get 50+ emails a day, but
only a few per week need immediate attention.

Thanks again for your input.

Sorry, I can't help you;. This isn't an Outlook issue. You need to talk to your Exchange administrator about this or ask for ideas in a WM5 forum.

Thanks again, Sue.

I've been asking some WM5 folk too, but no luck yet. I was trying the
Outlook Rule angle as Plan-B. Your answer, while not what I had hoped to
hear, at least will save me from beating my head on the wall with Plan-B.
Great value in that! ;-)

I'll focus my efforts on WM5 forums. Cheers!
