how do I disable "delete block" mode in Word?

when selecting text in a Word document and pressing the delete key, rather
than the selected text being immediately deleted, a question "delete block?
no(yes)" is displayed in the lower left. How do I disable this feature and
allow simple deleting?

Tools | Options | General: clear the check boxes for both items that refer
to WordPerfect.
