How do I disable spell checking for a character style?

I have a character style that I use for in-body literal expressions such as xml element names, function names, and so on. The body paragraph style I use is set to spell check in English US. I'd like to have this "literal expression" character style **not** spell check at all.

Word does give me the option to not spell check in the style definition:

Modify Style > Format > Language (then check "Do not check spelling or grammar")

but every time I check this box, the setting doesn't persist. When I go back to view/edit the style settings, the check is replaced with a dash.

Any ideas? Thanks.

{Sigh} That's a bug...

The closest you can come is to use a Paragraph style.

Use Help>Send Feedback to report the bug to Microsoft...

Why not (I know it is dumb and silly) just each time the term comes up
just save the spellings. Once saved they won't be highlighted again.

Sure, I realize that I *can* add everything to my personal dictionary, but that requires constant, ongoing effort whereas the disabling of spell checking on that style is a one time thing. Also, seeing the red squigglies where they aren't real errors visually pollutes the edit view. It makes real spelling errors that much harder to find.

Seriously thoguh, bumb/silly suggestions don't bother me in the least, and I appreciate you taking the time to offer help (really!).

Hi Phillip:

I suspect because he is "programming" :)

When you write program code in a document, you use a character style
(usually called "Code") to disable the spelling and grammar checker.

Then, when you want to check your code syntax, you load your special
"Coding" custom Dictionary and turn spelling on in the Code style.

The spell-checker will then instantly reveal any spelling errors you may
have made in your code.

Fix them, then turn the spelling off again in the Code style, and unload the
Coding dictionary. You won't be driven mad with squiggles while you work on
the rest of the document!

This used to work: I don't know when they broke it, but it's functionality
that professional users rely on a lot...

Cheers
