How do I fix: Select area - type - repalce one step - lost setup

It used to be default (I think) - Select text - start typing and area
selected is deleted and replaced - basically one step. Now I can't do that.
If I select an area and start typing - the new type is inserted before
selected area. What did I do?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit tab | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
