How do I fix the problem when a document is locked?

I am unable to type on a normal document in word. Can anyone help me out? All
it says on the bottom right when I try to type is "This modification is not
allowed because the document is locked."

One possibility is that you haven't activated that copy of Office, and it's
now in reduced functionality mode. Click Help > Activate Product and see
what it says.

Another possibility has to do with leftover temp files. See
