How do i get an object down to a specific measured size?

how do i get an object (box) to go to the measured size of 5 and 7/8 inches?
i have been slaving at this all day. please help me.

If you double-click on the object, you should get a Format <object> box with
a Size tab where you can enter the dimensions directly.
