With your local web open in front page, open the _private folder.
Right click the files that end in .cnt and set them to "Do not publish."

Close the local site, open the remote, open the page with the hit counter,
right click the counter and reset the count.
Save the page.

Well I tried that, again with no luck. It just will not set to a specific
number.
Can I possibly have a problem with my frontpage?

Open the live site/remote site directly in FP, then go the _private folder and open default.htm.cnt
in text editor (notepad), type in the correct number, do not change the total number of digits.

Interesting, because the source on the page shows you reset it to: 21983

Also, on the page that opened, the last update was the 16th.

Does the file name for your homepage in your local computer match the file
name of the one on the server??

If not rename the local one to match the one on the server.

That was the last number i tried to reset it to. I have it on a zip disk that
I work with from work and at home I will try to compare them maybe I'm
crossing files. There is also and index page uploaded that I do not use. I
use the default page as my home page.

When you publish to a server, FrontPage checks the server settings for the proper file name
for the default document or "Home Page" and renames the file accordingly, but does not
rename the file in your local copy.

The best practice imho, is to find out what the default file name is on the server and then
rename the local copy to match, and let FrontPage update hyperlinks when prompted.

The unused index.htm on the server can be deleted.

Ok now that I have done all the sugestions with no change. When i open the
file in my note pad the number is correct. I have deleted the index file
from the site so there will not be any confustion. But the counter still
does not reset to a specified numer. I'm now at wits end. I will just sit
here and hit the refresh button with the site open to get the counter to the
corrected number.

Open what file in notepad??

If you are looking at a .cnt file in the _private folder, tat has the correct count, but the
count doesn't display in the page,
you are editing the wrong file.

If your homepage file name is default.html, the file you need to be editing in the _private
folder **on the server** is:
default.html.cnt
