How do I get office to be my default software?

I have just installed office on my laptop. There was some other software on
it when I got it. Now when I receive email presentations or word documents,
when it opens it doesnt open in office and sometimes it doesnt open at all.
Does anyone have any ideas?

It sounds like you need to recreate the file types for the Office
applications so they 'take possession' of the file extensions.

Go to Start/Run and run the following commands:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.
