How do I get rid of holes in column?

When creating a column, I get all types of gaps in my sentences. I've tried
justification, deleting, pressing spacebar and doing deleting, you name it! I
need to be able to .pdf our column, but cannot correct these gaping holes!

If you're justifying the text and the column is narrow in relation to the
word length and font size, you will get ugly gaps. Hyphenation helps.
