How do I get rid of unwanted bitmap baxkground shading?

My Word 97 version worked fine. Now I have upgraded to 2003, my bitmaps are
printing out with grey shading in the background. Some of my bitmaps are
color & some are monochrome black & white bmp's. They all have this shading
issue when printed. They do not show shading on the screen. How do I fix
this?
