how do I get speech recognition files without the CD ROM?

N

Nixta23

I have Microsoft Office Professional and am trying to use the 'Speech'
option. When I try to use it, the program looks for installation files. I
don't have the Microsoft Office CD-ROM, as the program was already installed
on my computer, so I was wondering if the 'Speech recognition files' were
available?

You will probably need to ask the vendor you got the PC from where the
install files are located. They may have them on a partition on the hard
drive. But you will have to contact their tech support to find out.

Is your Office a trial version? If not get in touch with your vendor and insist they
send you the Office disks. You had to pay extra for your computer if Office was
included.

I thought the "rules" said that if they opted for Office on a custom system,
the disks *had* to be included. I don't remember where I read that tho.

The 'rules' are every owner of an OEM version of Office should have
their installation CDs. Microsoft provides the OEM the installation
CDs so there is really no reason for them to not include them.

Nope and I've searched everywhere.

This is an issue I've been working on for over a year now. Primarily
I've been trying to convince MS to provide replacement media to OEM
users since many *aren't* getting it from the manufacturers. And if
they *do* need replacement media there is no guarantee since the OEM
is charged per unique product key.

Out of the three major manufacturers I contacted, on the pretense of
purchasing a new computer, only one, Dell, knew they were to provide
me the installation CDs. All of the others told me they didn't supply
the installation media. Instead they would either, a) include an image
on the computer or b) provide a emergency recovery disk. Neither of
which is an acceptable response. (This took *hours* on the phone, btw)

I spoke with the MS OEM Licensing division as well. They are the ones
who confirmed that the contract MS has with the OEM is they are
required to provide the media.

As a matter of fact, it's been awhile since I heard anything more on
this. Hmm...sounds like a good time to start asking about it again.

Hi JoAnn,

While it's not the clearest language :)

"All Microsoft Office System products come on a holographic disc,"
will show on the pages for
'It came with the purchase of a new PC'
and if it's any 'genuine' Microsoft Software, 4 parts to
the purchase.
http://microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/coa.mspx

As Beth mentioned, it's not spelled out too clearly.
Even the Office Validation assistant
http://microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/office/default.mspx
can't help completely as it will verify if what you
have installed is genuine and will tell you what the
CD should look like, but it doesn't have a check box
for 'I did not receive one of these CDs with my purchase'.

Gateway used to provide the Office disks. I know that because I sold them -
and I bought two. That was in 2004 tho.
