That is the purpose of the Notes field. Go to Project/Task
Information/Notes tab and type in your text. You can display the notes
text as a column in the view but it will only display up to the first
line feed or 255 characters, whichever comes first. The notes text will
also appear if you hover the mouse over the Indicators field, (if
displayed), for each task.
As far as having "free text" in-line with task descriptions, Project is
a planning and scheduling application and it is not very strong when it
comes to textual input. It can be done, but it really pollutes the
schedule itself. That's why the Notes field is included.
