What version of Word are you using? If you aren't sure, look at Help | About
Microsoft Word.

I believe the drawing canvas was introduced in Word 2002. But you can still
use the drawing tools in Word 2000. Just display the Drawing toolbar and use
the tools to draw anywhere on the page.

Thanks, but I don't actually want to draw. I want to create a DVD box insert
and have been following some instructions in "Computer Active". I need the
drawing canvas according to their instructions.

You *don't* need a drawing canvas. You can create a DVD box insert using a
table, text boxes, etc. I can't imagine what you would have to do for a DVD
box insert that would *require* a drawing canvas, but in any case, there is
no such thing in your version of Word. If the instructions you are trying to
follow are posted online somewhere, please post the URL or quote the
instructions, and we can provide a workaround.

Hi Pam,

The instruction page is probably assuming you're using a current version of Word (2002 or 2003). Each of these has
Insert=>Picture=>New Drawing. For Word 2000 you need to install MS Office Draw98 to have the Insert=>Picture=>New Drawing choice.

Draw 98 is on Office 2000 CD#2 as an optional install item or can be downloaded from http://office.microsoft.com/downloads
It is the predecessor to the Drawing Canvas in Word 2002/2003/2007 but the 'toolbar' steps will differ from those of MS Draw.

Draw 98 and Drawing Canvas 200x are used to hold multiple shapes together in a single graphic representation on screen. You can use
and position the shapes on a single page without using that feature.
