How do I keep outlook from deleting older mail in inbox

I have autoarchive turned off and the read messages keep disappearing from my
inbox file

Click View>Arrange By>Current View and make sure "Messages" is selected.
Also make sure you're not sorting yoru Inbox by the icon field.

I already dad messages selected, but I don't understand what sorting by icon
field means.

The icon field is just to the left of the Attachment field and to the right
of the Flag Status and Header Status fields. It's the column that contains
the icons of the messages that indicate whether or not they've been read,
whether they've been forwarded, replied, and so on.
