I want a date in excell spreadsheet to change colour once the date has been
reached and is overdue so that attention is drawn to it

Rita,
This is a MS Project newsgroup. Unless the dates are imported from
Project, your question would be more appropriate for one of the many
newsgroups dealing with Excel.

Just for reference, dates do not become overdue, they simply define a
point in time. Something (e.g. a task) becomes "overdue" if it was
supposed to be completed by a certain time but wasn't. Identifying these
tasks with a unique font color in Project can be accomplished with VBA.
The same thing could be done in Excel.

This NG deals with MS Project, not Excel. The Excel group is
"microsoft.public.excel"

As others have pointed out this is an MS Project group rather than Excel.
But to answer your Excel question you could use conditional formatting.
