I refer to page numbers in other documents from a main document. When the
numbers in the other documents change, I have to renumber all the references
in the main document.
There must be a way to insert a field or code to do this automatically.

Look at the "number pages across files" article in the Numbering section on my
website. It's not exactly what you're asking, but what you want is in there.
