i have excel file linked with PowerPoint presentation, i will update
the excel file monthly so that the presentation will be updated
automatically monthly too. however, it's better to have historical
records by rename the excel and PowerPoint file. here comes the
problem, when i rename the files, the link doesn't work well. is there
anyway to keep the permanent link and rename the file? by macro?
thanks.

Not directly, no, because the link in this case isn't much more than a
bit of data that points to the linked Excel file. Change the name of
the file and that's the end of your link.

You could link to, say: CurrentData.XLS

Then next month:

Copy CurrentData.XLS to 2008_November_Data.XLS
Edit CurrentData.XLS to reflect December's data
