How do I recover a macro?

In our office network, we have a private user directory and a shared user
directory for documents. I created 2 macros that allow me to switch
directories and assigned the macros to a new toolbar. The macros work fine
during the time I have Word open. However, when I close Word and later open
it again, the macros are no longer available. How do I save the macros so
they are available for use during every Word session.

From the FAQ:

28. I can't save my customizations - AutoText, menus, etc.
Can't save normal.dot...
If you have Adobe Acrobat 7 installed see the last section of
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm.
Otherwise, hold down the Shift key when selecting the File
menu and select Save All.

Hope this helps,

Is Adobe Acrobat 7.0 installed on the computer? If yes, the
Acrobat 7.0 Create Adobe PDF toolbar add-in for Word prevents
Word from automatically saving changes to the normal.dot template
(which is where macros are stored unless you tell Word
otherwise). Create the macros again, and click "Shift+File |
Save All" to force Word to save the normal.dot template.
Alternatively, you can prevent the Adobe add-in from loading by
editing the Windows registry key
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\PDFMaker.OfficeAddin"
and changing the "LoadBehavior" subkey value from 3 to 0, but
you'll lose the PDF toolbar if you do this.

Thank you Charles....I followed the steps outlined in your response and the
macros remain but the toolbar customizations disappeared. I had buttons
ready to run the macros on two custom toolbars. The toolbars are there, the
macros are there but now the buttons to run the macros have disappeared. Any
idea on how to restore the button?

Hi,

My guess is that you saved normal.dot after you wrote the macros and created
the toolbar but before you put the buttons on the toolbar. Just a guess. I
don't use or have Acrobat so I can't test it.

Generally, I don't save my customizations in normal.dot. I save them in one
or more separate templates. Once you know how to do it, it makes using Word
easier and somewhat more predictable.

You want macros and toolbars that use the macros to be in the same template.
See http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for step-by-step
instructions on moving / sharing / copying / backing-up customizations
including AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, toolbars, macros,
etc. This includes instructions for creating/using a separate template to
hold these customizations.
