You certainly can remove the TOC. It is a single (complex) field. You would
remove the TC markings if they no longer reflect things you want in your
TOC.
As I and others have said before, though, the easy way to do a TOC is to
start with heading styles, either the built-in ones or your own with heading
levels attached to them.
