How do I remove a line segment in Word?

I'm using Microsoft Word 2003 on Windows XP pro...
When you type several dashes (-) in a row and hit return,
it creates a line across your screen...

Now, I am unable to delete the line in my document...

I can't select and delete it...
I can't go beyond it and hit backspace...
nothing seems to work...

Any advice on how to select and delete horizontal lines
in the middle of a Word document?
