How do I save an Import Map to GLOBAL MPT in project 2003?

B

Bob W.

I have created and saved a map to import from excel to Project 2003. I can
see the map in the project file it was creaed in but I am not able to save
it to the GLOBAL.MPT so it's available in the list of maps for subsequent
imports. Can someone point me in the right direction to update the GLOBAL.MPT
file?

Bob,
When I save an import map it is saved directly to the Global file, NOT
to the file that was active when I created it. Are you sure you see it
in the creating file?

If for some reason your custom map exists in your active project, use
the Organizer (Tools/Organizer/Maps tab) to copy it to your Global.

John.
I have tried your suggestion and I can see it in the GLOBAL.MPT while the
file is open, however as soon as I close the file and open another file it is
not displayed in the list of maps to select from.
I have full access to MS Project, the MPT file and the PC I am working from
yet I am not able to successfully change the GLOBAL MPT file.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,
This may seem like an obvious question but did you hit "save map" on the
last form of the import wizard? If yes, what version of Project are you
using?

John,
Yes I did save the map on the last form of the import wizard. The version of
MS Project I am using is Professional 2003.
Experimenting further yesterday I was able to save the map to an earlier
version of the GLOBAL.MPT file, however in doing this I don't have access to
the all the maps that were saved to the later/current version of the
GLOBAL.MPT file.

Thanks,

Bob

John,
I have now copied the maps from the current version of the GLOBAL.MPT file
to the old version where I was able to save the new map to. This MPT file
will now become my default MPT file with all maps available to me. I have no
idea why I was not able to update the later/current version with the latest
map I created.

Thank you very much for your assistance and ides with this problem, much
appreciated.

Bob,
Earlier versions of the Global? It is certainly possible to save
multiple copies of Global files for backup or specialized needs, but
unless those saved versions are put into a separate directory, there is
a possibility the active version of Project will point to the wrong
global file. It sounds like that is what happened in your case.
