How do I set up multiple functions for one cell in excel?

I am trying to use a function to do more than one thing in a cell. Example: I
have 2 columns and if the first column equals A, I want the second column to
return 1, but if the first column equals B, I want the second column to
return 2. I am not haveing any luck with this.

=IF(A1="A",1,IF(A1="B",2,"not A or B"))
