how do i take off read only

I want to save files to a cd but they come up as read only. The properties
box is not ticked on any file or folder.

That is the default for files on CD-R's. If you copy them back to your hard
drive all you have to do is copy the file with Windows Explorer, right-click
the file (after copied back to the hard drive) and select "Properties", then
uncheck the "Read Only" attribute.
