how do I unlock a document?

When opening a Word document and attempting to type, I get a message in the
bottom left telling me that "modicfication is not allowed because the
document is locked".

Many of the Word icons and option are greyed out and i cannot cut and paste
either.

how can i right this? Thanks in advance

This sounds like "reduced functionality mode" either because you have not
activated your software or because you have an expired trial version of
Office 2003. What happens if you start Word and click on Help | Activate
Product?
