how do i update custom fields automatically on opening

I have inserted some custom fields into the header of my word document, these
link to a value which I add via the Document Properties Tab Box. I also
include filename and path in the footer of this document. When I open the
document however, it does not update these fields automatically. This I would
like to happen so that filename updates depending on who opens these
documents. Any help on how to do this please?
