How do you deactivate old version of ms office and activate the n.

I have been using ms office 2002 and i bought msoffice 2003
To install the new version i had to reinstall the preload cd disc that came
with the pc when it was bought (which had no ms office 2002)
I then instal the newer version but the product key was not recoongnised

OK, I'm completely confused by this. You already had Office XP installed,
and so why did you need to "reinstall the preload CD" ?
