when i type documents, and try some indenting of a word with the space bar,
it will not do it . I place my pointer ahead of the word , but it will not
indent.

It works sometimes. I tried to find some auto control but have not found.

Assuming that you are trying to start a paragraph or something similar, you
can try:
Using Format | Paragraph and fill in your choices
Use the tab key
If you are trying to have a block of text indented, highlight it and use the
Increase Indent button on the formatting tool bar

If you are trying to indent a line in the middle of a paragraph, you can't
do it with spaces and likely not with tabs, which Word will just keep piling
up at the end of the previous line. You need to either (a) insert a line
break (Shift+Enter) at the end of the previous line or (b) if what you want
is a hanging indent, create one using the ruler or the Paragraph dialog (see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/UsingRulers.htm).
