How do you link a phone number to a calendar contact

I have an appointment scheduled on the calendar. Is there a way to directly
link the appointment to a phone number without having to go back to contacts,
then scroll through names, then click on contact to look up phone number

Well, this is almost what you describe, but not quite. When you create the
appointment, click the Contacts button on the bottom of the appointment
form. Then choose the contact that you want to link to. Later, when you open
the appointment, you can just double click on the Contact's underlined name
and it will open the contact directly.
