How do you lock a page's content?

D

In working in Publisher 2007 I can not lock the images and text to each pape.
I have a 10 page document I am adding graphics and text. Your help will be
appricated.

You cannot lock a Publisher document. You can create 10 different Master pages
and put the objects on the Master page. That way when the document is opened the
objects cannot be automatically edited by mistake.

May I ask why you want to lock this data? Maybe there's another way to do
what you want.

May I take this one up, please? I too find I would like to 'lock' pages.

For instance, I produce a booklet for a production meeting, using Autoflow
throughout. I finish it, I think it's perfect, but people want changes. I
need to add a page here, delete a page there, move a page from one place to
another.

When I do that, I find that the booklet has gone completely berserk. The
whole thing needs to be taken apart and put together again.

Isn't there some way of ensuring that content stays where it's meant to be
while you change the stuff around it?

Thank you for your quick response.

So I produce a booklet in Publisher, I send people pdfs, they respond and
ask me to make changes by adding paragraphs, adding and deleting pages and so
on; I do this and the booklet is completely ruined and I have to start again,
because I wasn't able to lock the pages that didn't need changing. Or is
there another way?

Thanks

There is no other way. I don't understand why it is important to lock pages if
you are not sending the Publisher file. If folks are sending you changes why
would you need to edit pages that are okay?

I think what John is trying to say is this:

* John sends file to various parties for proofreading and approval
* Revisions to be made are submitted
* John makes these revisions to the file
* Making one small revision on one page throws the layout on other pages
into disarray.

* Being able to lock the layout of pages would reduce the disarray
created by the minor modifications requested.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way really to avoid this.

John:
Moving a page with AutoFlow'd content on should change anything.
Similarly, adding a page shouldn't affect layout at all (although adding
a single left or right page in the middle of a booklet-type publication
will obviously make all the left pages and right pages have the wrong
layout for their new locations - but locking layout down wouldn't fix
that). I can't see how you would expect the text to behave if you delete
it - the text has to go somewhere, otherwise you have a big gap in the
middle of your text story.

Thanks, Ed, that's what I meant!

I am having similar problem - when I delete pages in the middle of my
document the text appears on the next page and then a page at the end of my
document gets knock off! I'm trying to learn this software on my own so if
there is solution to John P's dilemma that would help me too! I don't get
why you can't delete text and that it "has to go somewhere"! Shouldn't it go
in the trash? Can I not delete unwanted pages (i.e. page 6 and 7) and have
page 8 become page 6?

M

Mary Sauer

Is your publication setup as a booklet? View, uncheck two page spread. You
should now be able to delete a single page.

K

KLeDrew

Whether I delete it in single page mode or 2 page spread (it is a booklet)
I've discovered that it deletes the last page of the booklet, not the page I
am viewing or working on. In two page spread view I asked it to delete right
hand page... then the last page of the document disappeared. ? any way of
asking it to delete a specific page number?

M

Mary Sauer

Booklets are setup so when you delete a page you are also deleting what is on
the back of that page. That content has to go somewhere. In essence you are
restacking the pages. Insert a page at the end. Booklets must be in groups of
four...
If you need to do a lot of deleting, change the publication to a custom size 8.5
X 5.5 portrait. Do your editing, turn it back into a booklet when you are
finished.

I'll try that thanks... my problem is not the restacking it's the fact I
cannot delete the content of the page by deleting page. It just deletes a
page at the end (with the end page content). My document is getting pretty
messed up - I'm now trying to copy and paste content from a saved previous
version and that's not working too well either. Hopefully changing the
format to portrait will help. I'm feeling frustrated.

K

KLeDrew

Hi again Mary - my booklet is 8.5 x 11 and can't be contained the size you
suggest. Is there no other way of removing the booklet format to change back
to single pages? I've searched all the options and can't seem to do it
unless I apply a different template which removes all my custom formatting.
To delete the pages I want removed I tried moving them to the back of the
document and removing four pages at once and it still removes other pages in
my document and just slides the text from the last four pages into other
parts of the booklet. I'm thinking if I can separate the pages that would
stop happening. ?

M

Mary Sauer

Are you printing on tabloid (11 X 17) stock? You simply need to go to page setup
and select letter.

If you are using 2007 I suggest going to page setup; chose advanced on the right
pane, type 8.5 X 11 in the page size and select One page per sheet.

K

KLeDrew

No didn't use tabloid. Your suggestion was 8.5 x 5.5 which was too small for
my use - I tried re selecting the 8.5 x 11 single page but still when I
delete a page the rest of the document gets rather messed up. The text of
the deleted pages move into the document - objects disappear - pretty much
all 'fudged' up!

Must be something in how I set up the brochure initially - I'm stumped.
I've just moved the pages I want to delete to the end of the brochure for now
with a section between the main document and the unwanted pages. This
program doesn't seem to be very "intuitive". Not so good for those who want
to teach themselves!
